Check out the simple steps below to clean current clutter in your home while also preventing it in the future.

Keep, donate, trash

Think of the last time you have used or needed each item while you separate them into keep, donate, and trash piles. The most effective way is to do one room at a time, this will avoid clutter left behind. If you cannot remember the last time you used something, you will be better off tossing it out or donating it. If you have items that are not part of your daily life but you cannot part with, the option of a climate-controlled local storage unit may be a better option.

Re-vamp your Space

Time to tackle your keep items. Placing items together by group or by purpose is a good way to keep things organized. Physically doing this will allow you to prep for how you would like these items to appear in your space. Would a new bookshelf be a good idea to add? What about some plastic storage containers? Do you need a filing cabinet for important paperwork? Writing ideas out or drawing a sketch will eliminate wasted time as you can erase and create something new rather than physically moving items around. If you find you have too many items for the flow of the room you would like, make an extra pile of your items for storage.

Get Shopping

You have a design laid out that you like, it is now time to take a trip to the store. Depending on your design you may need to make a few stops, such as the hardware store, container store, or even a department store. For the larger items, you may want to purchase large, clear stackable storage containers. You may need a few extra containers for your storage items as well. Smaller items could be organized by using a shelf with cubbies or pull-out drawers that you can use with clear drawer organizers inside.

Seasonal Items

Any items you do not need as part of your daily routine that you do not want to part with as well as seasonal items like holiday decor and any items with sentimental value are things to consider for a different organizing option. Self-storage facilities are often located close to home and may even provide a free truck for your move-in to help you safely transfer your items. Be sure to pack these items well and label any boxes or containers to easily find items when needed.

Maintaining a clutter-free home

To maintain your fresh space, design a cleaning schedule that works for you. Monthly cleaning of high-traffic areas will save you time down the room as clutter will not be able to form. Be mindful when shopping, or acquiring new items to either donate or discard right away to keep the items from entering your home in the first place.

In the end, a clutter-free home can ease tension, reduce stress, and improve your overall quality of life. Having a space for all your items with improve functionality with everyday tasks and help you and your family move seamlessly throughout the home.
